Frequently asked questions
WHY USE SEED BALLS?
Our seed balls are designed to make growing wildflowers from seed simpler. This ancient Japanese technique of seed propagation provides all the nutrition and protection seeds require for early growth. Our wildflower seeds are encased in clay which protect the seed from ants, mice, birds etc. and peat free compost, giving them the nutrition boost they need. No gardening skills neccessary. Just Throw, Water, Grow. There is no need to propagate or plant the seed, just scatter on top of soil, water and watch as the beautiful wildflowers grow! Each Beeball are packed with seeds from 20 different nectar rich UK native species suited to different conditions.
WHEN & WHERE CAN I SCATTER MY SEED BALLS?
Seed balls can be scattered at any time of the year, although spring and autumn is usually an optimal time to start wildflowers growing. Our seed balls include annuals (the plant survives for one growing season) and perennials (plant survives for more than two growing seasons). Once grown, your wildflowers will self seed and improve their display each year. Seed balls can be scattered on top of soil or compost in your garden. For grassy areas it’s best to remove a layer of top-soil before scattering seed balls, however, they do contain yellow rattle to help supress grass. Seed balls can also be placed on top of pots (or other planters) filled with soil.
HOW LONG WILL MY SEED BALLS LAST IN THE BOX?
They will keep well for at least 3 years if they are stored in a cool and dry place.
WHAT AREA DOES EACH PACK COVER?
Each pack of seedballs contains enough wildflower seed to cover approx. 1-2m2. If growing in a small pot, 3 – 5 seed balls will probably be enough. For larger pots or window boxes we would recommend 6 – 10 seed balls. Remember your wildflowers will get more abundant with each year so leave some space for them to grow.
